How Do Crowns Work?
A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a strong dental covering placed over a weak or damaged tooth. It fixes and reinforces a tooth while restoring the full integrity of your bite. They're custom-made and shaped to blend in seamlessly with your smile.
A dental crown can be used for a variety of reasons, such as strengthening an individual tooth, providing reinforcement after a root canal treatment, replacing a failed filling, or completing a dental implant. Crows also have an aesthetic purpose, and can be used to restore the appearance of discolored or worn teeth.
Traditional Crowns
- Traditional Dental Crowns: The process of receiving a traditional dental crown takes at least two appointments. On the first visit, the dentist will prepare your tooth and take impressions of it, which will be used to create the crown in a lab. A temporary crown is placed on your vulnerable tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is fabricated. In a couple of weeks, you'll return to the dental office to have your final crown bonded to the tooth.

Reasons You May Need a Dental Crown
- A Cracked or Broken Tooth: A tooth that's been extensively damaged by decay or trauma lacks adequate healthy enamel and dentin to protect it. A dental crown may be needed to offer extra support and protection. Left untreated, bacteria could continue to eat away at the tooth and even spread to other areas of the mouth.
- Protection After Root Canal Therapy: Root canal therapy is used to preserve severely infected and decayed teeth. After the procedure, the structural integrity of your tooth is weakened. A crown can reinforce the structure and protect the tooth from further damage or infection.
- A Cavity That's Too Large for a Filling: A tooth may require crown coverage if it has a large cavity or multiple cavities. Adding a filling to the tooth may crack the enamel, exposing the tooth to more decay. A dental crown will provide more strength and better protection than a filling.
- Worn or Discolored Enamel: Poor oral hygiene, dental trauma, and certain medical conditions can permanently affect the shape or color of a tooth. If you have a weak or discolored tooth, you can transform its appearance and structure with a crown.
